Jernigan Genealogy - Martin Jernigan

Martin Jernigan - Martin Jernigan was born in or around 1804 and I believe he was born in Sumner County, Tennessee, the home of many of my Jernigan relatives. Martin was a common Jernigan name and he married Ann Groves on 3 Aug 1824. The couple had at least two children, maybe three, Granville B. & Susan for certain, and one record indicated the possibility of another Martin Jernigan as a son. Martin Jernigan, Sr. purchased land in Randolph County, Illinois, in August of 1831, he unfortunately died shortly thereafter, on the morning of 6 Oct 1831. His widow, Ann Groves, remarried Jeremiah Murray (or Murrah) and had six more children. His will was administered by Bryant Jernigan, Martin's brother, where Martin "wished Bryant Jernigan to have his son Granville B. Jernigan educated in all the arts and sciences of the English language."

  • Granville B. Jernigan - Granville B. Jernigan was born in 1825 and married Keziah Ann Stone in 1848. Granville B. and Keziah had seven children; Sarah Elizabeth, William Nicholas, J. Martin, Mary Ann, Marlin R., Frances S. and Robet Jernigan. Granville B. Jernigan served as a Private in the 30th Regiment, Illinois Infantry of the Civil War, fighting for the Union, and was a died as a P.O.W. in Georgia. Granville B. Jernigan was buried in Andersonville, GA.
  • Susan Jernigan
  • Martin Jernigan - I am not 100% sure that Martin had a Martin Jr., but more data seems to point toward another Martin Jernigan. I have recently come across data suggesting that a Martin Jernigan died in 1862 and his wife, Nancy J. Jernigan, later filed for Civil War pension.
